    The role of visa 2 dance in the development of contemporary dance in Tanzania

    This study was intended to examine the role of Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd in the development of contemporary dance in Tanzania as was set out to examine whether Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd has improved the contemporary dance as a dance genre in Tanzania. The general objective was to find out the contribution of Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd to the development of contemporary dance in Tanzania by identifying its objectives as well as studying its current activities in relation to the promotion of contemporary dance in Tanzania. The study was conducted purposively, on a total of twenty respondents selected from staff members of Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd, contemporary dancers, choreographers, audiences, Dar es Salaam municipalities’ cultural officers and partners/sponsors of Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd. Face to face interviews, observation and review of archival documents were the sources of information and methods the researcher used to collect data. The study revealed that the Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd. was established with ten major objectives mentioned in chapter four below. These objectives were based on the improvement of the genre, the empowerment of the Tanzanian artists, specifically contemporary dancers and choreographers, to network and open cultural borders and to generate employment and income to the Tanzanian artists and art managers from the performing arts industry. This report points out the features of the contribution of Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd to the improvement of contemporary dance in Tanzania. The study reveals that through contemporary dance training, performances, workshops and seminars, Tanzanian young dancers and choreographers and the contemporary dance in general, have achieved the exposure, networking and professionalism from working with international and professional contemporary dance practitioners. In Tanzania contemporary dance got a new positive outlook since the establishment of Visa 2 Dance Festival Ltd.
