Ict applications in the health sector: a case study in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Ndumbaro, Edna Sarah Mpelumbe
The potential role of ICT in the health sector is to improve the delivery of health services and would also help to deal with major constraints in uplifting the health standards of Tanzanians. The overall objective of the study is to investigate how it will be possible for the health sector in Tanzania to make use of ICT applications. The health industry can take full advantage of the efficiencies and effectiveness of ICT products and services in its adoption of e-commerce. Significance of this research is to raise awareness of the impact of ICT in health sector in Tanzania, and adoption of basic applications in ICT after collaboration with other stakeholders. A questionnaire designed to assess awareness, level of current use and attitude was sent to organizations with leading health services. The main problems identified were lack of ICT-skills and education, inadequate infrastructure, finance and ICT support. The main finding is that development of ICT in the health sector of Tanzania needs an integrated effort across sectors among the stakeholders otherwise wide-scale e-commerce is doomed if technology is not also spread throughout the society. The Main recommendation is that capacity building is crucial in taking full advantage of the efficiencies and effectiveness of ICT products and services.
