Item Internationalization of local banks in Tanzania: a case of CRDB and EXIM bank(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Ndongole, LeticiaThis study evaluated the internationalization of local banks in Tanzania. The study specifically assessed the factors behind internationalization of local Tanzanian banks, these were categorised into bank specific factors and host country banking conditions. Also this study explored the factors that determine the entry mode of local Tanzanian banks into foreign marketsaim and lastly the problems hindering internationalization of local banks were assessed. This study used the case study of Exim Bank and CRDB Bank due to the fact that these are the only Tanzania local banks to enter foreign markets. Both primary and secondary data were employed in this study, primary data was obtained from a sample of 40 employees from the two (2) banks. Secondary data was obtained from various reports including annual reports of banks and Tanzania banking survey reports. Data was analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that bank specific factors play a major role in influencing internationalization of Tanzanian local banks. These include the growth in assets, profitability and coverage of services locally. Also host country economic factors influence the internationalization of local banks; these include CPI Inflation, banking competition, GDP per capita growth in the host country. It was observed that the main problems hindering internationalization of local banks are narrow coverage of services, fear of extra risks associated with internationalization and competition from foreign banks. It was recommended that local banks should improve the quality of their services and engage themselves with foreign reputable banks to carry out their services. .
