Girls primary education in rural areas with reference to dropouts
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1995) Ndimba, Consolata Tabani
The purpose of this study was to find out gender related factors which lead primary schools pulling out school before completing vii. Three hypotheses were advanced: Firstly, it was hypothesized that girls dropout is caused out by pregnancy. Secondly, the parents are marrying off their daughters before they complete the primary cycle and thirdly, the school environment is a contributing factor to girls dropout. The study is a case study carries out in Mara region in Tarime district. Three divisions of Inchungu, In charge and selected deliberately because it ranks high in the dropout rate ion Tanzania mainland. It has been reported that in 1992there were about 1925 dropout cases among the girls in the whole region. Tarime region was also selected on the basis that it is the one where traditions are still very strong compared to the rest five districts in Mara region. The data producing population sample was composed of eleven girls, fifty five teachers and fourteen parents. Fifteen schools were surveyed on the basis that they were easy to reach during could not be reached. Questionnaires, interviews, observation and documentation methods were used to collect data. The data was processed by the tally sheet method and the percentages were calculated for tabulation. The study is organized in five chapters: chapter one gives the introduction to the problem. Chapter two gives the related literature review. The methodology is described in chapter five comprises the summary findings and conclusion of the study. Recommendations are also found in this last chapter. It was found out that pregnancy was not the leading factor for high girls dropout in primary schools. Pregnancy stands at 3.5% in the three divisions. Truancy was found to be a factor which led to high dropout rates. It stands at 47.7%. truancy was caused by the poverty of most of the girls’ mothers in the area. Due to the fact that mothers bear the burden of education of their children, many girls leave school so as to help their families with their labour. Another factor which affects girls schooling in the area was marriage. Parents still cherish the culture of marrying off under-age daughters. They do this so as to obtain heads of cows through dowry, marriage stood to be the cause of girls leaving school by 26.7%. in the light of the findings it is recommended that the Kuria society should be educated about the importance of girls education so that they would not cherish that disgraceful culture of marrying off daughters before completing school. Moreover, due to the poverty of most of the women in the area, women should be help to raise their productive capacities so as to support themselves and their children’s education in general.
