    Impact of mushroom farming on community livelihood in Kibaha district

    Worldwide Mushroom farming has been growing recently. However, in developing countries its contribution to the livelihoods still remain a challenge especially at local levels. This study assessed the impact of Mushroom farming on community livelihood in the Kibaha district of Tanzania. The study employed a mixed method research design to collect data through focus group discussions (FGDs), key informants interviews (KIIs), direct observation, household interviews and documentary review. Results showed that, the adoption of the Mushroom farming had gained momentum in recent years (< 6 years). The respondents were involved in two main activities with regards to Mushroom farming that are production and selling. The major reason for engaging in Mushroom farming was for income generation. The study established three major Mushroom species, which were cultivated in the area namely; Pleurotus sp, Lentinusedodes sp and Grifolafrondosa sp. The results also showed that Mushroom farming was vital contributor to the livelihood of the community. It appeared that there were enormous challenges to the Mushroom farming related to production, marketing and knowledge. Mushroom farmers showed high willingness to continue with Mushroom farming. However, marital status had positive significant (p<0.05) influence that married households were to continue with Mushroom farming than single and widowed. The study argued that the Mushroom farming is an important economic activity to the community. Hence, it is recommended that, there should be an effort by government and other stakeholders to educate and sensitize farmers on the appropriate methods of Mushroom cultivation and processing. Furthermore, the Mushroom farmers should be linked to better markets. This could be a viable option for improving the Mushroom farming practices and have more impact on the community involved.
