Efficient admissioncontrol scheme for IEEE 802.lle wireless local area networks
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Ndekirwa, Ayo Edward
IEEE 802.lle Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) standard has become popular in use due to the increase of portable communication devices and flexibility in deployment. It employs contention based channel access mechanism known as Enhanced distributed channel Access (EDCA) which allows prioritization of the real-time multimedia traffic in accessing the channel in order to provide QoS support for real-time multimedia applications. Transmission opportunity (TXOP) is the EDCA’s parameter in which the station is allowed to transmit several packets after winning the channel regardless of the available bandwidth status. However, admitting many packets to the network causes bandwidth overload which results in network delay, packet loss and poor throughput. In this study, an efficient admission control scheme for IEEE 802.lle WLANs was introduced where the available bandwidth was estimated. The bandwidth status was established by comparing the theoretical achievable bandwidth and estimated available bandwidth. The admissionfor packets to the network was done based on the estimated available bandwidth the number of packets admitted to the network was controlled by adjusting the TXOP length according to the available bandwidth status.Simulation results showed that, throughput gain improved up to 11% over the current admission control algorithm with the average throughput of 0.5031 Mbps. The network delay was reduced up to 106 milliseconds compared to that of the current admission control was 0.905 while for the new admission algorithm the value rose to 0.9308 and the packet loss rate for the new scheme was minimized up to 22% of the current admission algorithm.
