Study of Morton’s complementary relationship model and turc and pike's model for the estimation of regional evaporation
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1995) Nattabi, Harriet
Evaporation has a great influence on hydrological, meteorological and in general all environmental processes. Unfortunately, evaporation is still among the less understood aspects of the hydrological cycle. A lot of effort has been put in the development of evaporation estimation models. This study applies two of the theoretical models which have been developed for the estimation of regional evaporation; Morton's 1975, 1976 model and Turc's 1954, 1955 model as modified by Pike in 1964, to four catchments from different regions of Tanzania. The aim of this work is to examine the relevance of the two models to catchments in Tanzania. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to regional evaporation and explains the objectives of the study, while chapter 2 gives the literature review, a brief summary of the climate of the study region and the data used in the study. The methods which were used in the study are given in chapter 3, although those which are readily available in hydrological books have been left out. The results of the study are presented and discussed in chapter 4. The results of the model were compared to estimates of the actual regional evaporation, mainly by the use of graphs. The results showed that Turc and Pike's model, had good estimates for the semi arid regions while the estimates from Morton's model were poor. Finally the conclusions drawn from the study are given, and a few recommendations for further research are made.
