The effects of not adherering to planned repair and maintenance schedules: the case of Tanzania Zambia raily authority- Dar es Salaam workshop, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2006) Nangale, Joseph Sungwa Maduhu Batandu
This study was set out to the effect of not adhering to plan repair and maintenance schedules to wagons and coaches. Non-adherence to planned repair and maintenance schedules result into frequent failures. Thus, equipment cannot provide timely high utility to service the railway organization effectively and efficiently. This led to poor service to passenger and goods trains in the railway industry, particularly, TAZARA. To investigate this research problem, the study dealt with a sample drawn from wagons and coaches engaged in train operations, maintenance and repair at Dar-es Salaam workshop, wayside stations and repair depots during the study. The study employed both sampling techniques that are deliberate and random. Deliberate sampling was used to select wayside stations, repair depots and the workshop, Dar-es-Salaam. Random sampling was used to select the sample size among the selected stations, repair depots and workshop. The method used to collect information included: Questionnaires, Observations, Interviews and Documentary reviews. Data analysis involved item analysis and relevant calculations. Lack of funds to acquire essential inputs makes the workshop unable to adhere to planned repair and maintenance schedules. This led to under fulfilment of the maintenance repair plans leading to insufficient release number of quality-repaired wagons and coaches from the workshops, consequently affecting workshop's performance and train operations.
