    Examining Uganda’s compliance with provisions of the EAC treaty on socio-economic empowerment of women.

    This was a qualitative study on socio-economic empowerment of women in Uganda. The study showed that women socio-economic empowerment has been greatly embedded in history, cultural and traditional practices as well as discrimination and abuse of women. The study established that Uganda endeavours to correct these socio-economic imbalances through recognizing women’s fundamental human rights and freedoms in the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The interviews conducted showed that socio-economic empowerment of women has been greatly affected by inadequate implementation of the existing laws, inadequate finances, trade restrictions, justification of violence against women, harsh customary practices, poverty and long working hours by women yet they are not being paid for such work. The study noted that Uganda is a signatory to International and Regional instruments on women’s gender equality and human rights and have been adopted in Uganda and consequently being implemented through the domestic laws to address gender imbalances. The study also revealed that numerous efforts have been made by the government of Uganda as well as various stakeholders in ensuring socio-economic empowerment of women. Such include gender mainstreaming in all institutions, promoting girl-child education, and active involvement of women in decision making processes among others. However, there are still constraints hindering socio-economic empowerment of women in Uganda such as inadequate law implementation, violence and harsh customary practices, inadequate finances and trade restrictions among others.
