    Awareness and application of total quality Management ( TQM ) in the Tanzanian construction industry:the case of contactors.

    The construction industry plays a vital role in the economic and physical development of ant country. In Tanzania, however, the performance of construction projects is inadequate. This study discusses the extent to which contractors in the country are aware, practices of or are applying total quality management ( TQM ) practices, which has been stated as an enabler for performance improvement, in their operations. The study is based on the information gathered from questionnaires supported by interviews. High responses of 34 ( 97.1% ) out of 35 distributed questionnaires to the contractors have been achieved. Company stakeholders, namely owners, Engineers , Quantity surveyors, and Technicians, have been sampled through random and non-probability sampling to accomplish primary data collection. It is shown that the majority of construction companies are practicing aspects of quality management procedures without recognizing the term TQM. Only one of the foreign companies was found to have adopted TQM philosophy. Most companies mission statements indicate that they intend to grow and produce quality products. It would therefore, seen that they could benefit from (information on, or ) the adoption of a quality management system and total quality management.
