Assessment of factors affecting effectiveness of succession planning in the Tanzania government Executive agencies: a case of Tanzania buildings agency (TBA)
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Mwangosi, Lumuli
The study investigated the factors affecting effectiveness of succession planning in Tanzania government executive agencies. The study was guided by three objectives: To examine the extent to which management commitment, management preparedness and employee’s awareness to succession planning lead to effective succession planning in Tanzania government executive agencies. The study used both quantitative and qualitative designs to collect and analyse data. A total of 70 respondents were randomly selected from TBA. Questionnaire, interview and documentary reviews were used to collect data. SPSS was used to calculate frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation for the study findings. The findings indicate that management awareness, commitment, and preparedness influence succession planning in the Tanzania government executive agencies. Nevertheless, it was revealed that TBA does not identify future leaders for effective succession planning. In addition, it was revealed that TBA does not track potential administrative openings as a result of retirements. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there is no training policy and succession planning policy in TBA for training its staff and that there is no budget in TBA for training its staff. The study recommends that TBA management should ensure that there is commitment to succession planning. Moreover, TBA should create awareness among employees on succession planning. The study recommends that TBA has to make sure that training and succession planning policies are in place and allocate enough training budget for effective succession planning.
