Factors affecting management of teachers in Tanzanian private English medium primary schools
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2001) Mwandezi, Michael Nelson
This dissertation discusses the Factors Affecting Management of Teachers in Tanzanian Private English-Medium Primary Schools (PEMPS). The relevant literature review included both theoretical and empirical literature. The study was guided by five research tasks. The tasks were; to assess the management functions of head teachers in the PEMPS, to assess the availability and adequacy of resources in the PEMPS, to examine the process of recruiting teachers and assess their qualification in the PEMPS, to determine the powers possessed by heads of the schools over the teachers in the PEMPS and to assess communication and control in the PEMPS. The study was conducted in the Southern Highlands and Eastern Zones and involved nine Private English Medium Primary Schools. A triangulation method was used in collecting data. The methods used included questionnaires, documentary reviews, interviews informal discussions and observations. The study was mainly guided by research tasks. The research findings revealed that these schools had highly qualified teachers. The schools seemed to serve pupils from elite families, academicians and businessmen. This is caused by the high fees which are unaffordable to be paid by ordinary people. The schools were well stocked with necessary learning and teaching materials. The study concluded that most teachers in the PEMPS seemed to be satisfied with the democratic leadership style adopted by head teachers. They were also satisfied with their incentives. Other factors which affected the management of teachers included teacher’s composition in the schools, source of income and the powers of head teachers to hire and fire. It is recommended that PEMPS should constantly maintain teachers' working environments in order to retain the qualified and hardworking teachers. If the Government could subsidies the provision of education, things would be much better because the involvement of the private sector in education delivery, supplements Government efforts.
