Improved design of low volume sealed roads in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Mwakyami, Lusekelo Asukenye
The main objective of this study was to identify the appropriate improved road designs for Low Volume Sealed Roads (LVSRs) with the aim of improving the design of LVSRs in Tanzania. Literature review was therefore done by reviewing the general situation in neighboring countries especially SADC countries with regard to the environmental, climatic, structural design and cost factors. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro regions in Tanzania. Data were collected from roads and from primary surveys and secondary sources. Soil conditions and pavement structure data were collected for low volume sealed roads in the two regions. The study found that the improved design method for pavements of LVSRs results in cost savings of 51% compared with conventional method of pavement design in Tanzania. The study recommends that LVSRs in Tanzania should be defined by a maximum traffic volume of 300 vpd. The study also recommends that the improved pavement design method for lightly trafficked sealed roads in Southern Africa developed by TRL, which is the most cost effective, be used to design low volume sealed roads in Tanzania and especially by sealing them with Otta seal or Surface dressing.
