The role of Tanzania commission for universities (TCU) in promoting quality education in private universities in Tanzania
(The university of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Mwakitalu, Anna A.
The study sought to examine the role of TCU in promoting quality education in private universities. It specifically examined the strategies used by TCU to promote quality education in private universities, challenges that TCU faces in dealing with private universities and examined stakeholders’ views on the role that TCU plays in promotion of quality education in private universities. Data were collected through documentary review, observation, interviews and focus group discussions. The findings at TCU showed no differences in strategies used to promote quality education in private universities and public universities. The study discovered that private universities were encouraged to attend their meetings so that they can learn from what the public universities were doing. The study recommends that TCU should encourage and support private providers of higher education to institutionalize a culture of self-managed evaluation that builds on and surpasses minimum standards. For further studies, there is a need to carry out longitudinal research which will track over time the strategies that TCU are using to promote quality education.
