    Peasants and migrants: a case study from Usangu plains

    The study investigates why many people migrate to Usangu plains, the attractive factors of the plain and how migrant settle in the plains. The study revealed that the migration into Usangu plains are not organized in any form at all, but individual people have been moving into this areas constantly. The migrations are not taking place from a less developed area to more developed area but are from highly developed areas to less developed area of Usangu. And because of this, the population in Usangu has been increasing. This is partly the direct product of social change and economic development and partly the direct product of his rates of population growth. This population growth is very important for continued change and development. The population growth and rural-rural migration will continue to be an integrate part in economic and social change in Usangu. Migrant labour is not much demanded in Usangu. The seasonal little labour forces together with the labour provided by the peasants themselves are more than enough. The majority of the migrants moving into Usangu seem to have a good idea of what Usangu is and what Usangu can offer to them mainly from having visited the place before either on business or paying visits to relatives of friends residing in Usangu. The majority go to Usangu with the idea o earning a living in farming. The links with home areas and Usangu are very strong because of these visits paid by both sides.
