Item The effect of port congestion on logistics and supply chain performance(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Mwakatage, FrancoThis study investigated the Impact of port Congestion on Logistics and Supply Chain Performance using Dar es Salaam port as the case study. The main objective was split into three specific objectives that are examined whether or not port congestion contributes to increased shipping and trucking cost, to identify if port congestion contributes to delay of goods and services and to examine whether or not port congestion contribute to decrease of trade volume on logistics and supply chain. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Findings from the study revealed that (i) port congestion contributed to increased shipping and trucking cost. Most of respondents agreed that congestion caused long waiting time, reduced mobility, increased delivery costs, labour cost increased and also increased labour payment. (ii) Port congestion caused delay of service and goods, such as late discharge of container, complex transaction, reduced mobility, of ships and trucks and increased production cost has hindered on time of service and goods deliverance. (iii) Port congestion decreased trade volume for Dar es Salaam via the port in terms of delay in service delivery, long waiting time, delay in turn -around time, poor connectivity with other ports, poor gang productivity and berth occupancy, all attribute to poor trade performance at the port. The study concludes that port congestion impinges upon proper development of the port and thus, undermines the national revenue collection due to decrease in port effectiveness.
