    Management of African liberation heritage buildings in Dar es salaam and Bagamoyo

    African Liberation Struggle is one of the most commemorated events in African history. Soon after the independence of Ghana in April, 1957 through Kwame Nkrumah, many African countries became eager to fight for their freedom. In 1958 Pan African Freedom Movement for East and Central Africa (PAFMECA) was formed. In 1962 Southern African countries joined the movement and hence the name changed to Pan African Freedom Movement for East, Central and Southern Countries (PAFMECSA). On 25th May 1963 Organization of African Unity was launched in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where Liberation Committee was formed to co-ordinate liberation struggles to countries under colonial powers. Its headquarters were based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In due regards, Dar es Salaam became the host city for African liberation movements and freedom fighters. Thus, a number of liberation buildings ranging from training camps, offices and residences were opened. The study aimed at assessing the prevailing state of preservation and management status of the existing liberation heritage buildings in Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo. The study revealed that the majority of the liberation heritage buildings have moderate state of preservation, but few are poorly preserved. The underlying causes are physical agents and anthropogenic actions such as inadequate cultural heritage policies and laws, lack of public awareness, lack of funds and poor coordination among heritage stakeholders. It is recommended that more emphasis should be given on improving public awareness, formation of liberation heritage society, improving of conservation and heritage trainings, and launching a liberation heritage fund.
