Implementation of innovations in education in Tanzania: the case of one month heads of secondary schools leadership and management capacity building training course at ADEM in Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Mundogo, Grace Ukende Zakaria
The purpose of the study was to investigate the perception of heads of secondary schools on the implementation of the innovations in education in Tanzania. The training course for heads of secondary schools was used as a case study. Specially, the study examined the usefulness of the course, the extent to which heads of secondary schools were motivated, and the extent to which they put into practice the knowledge and skills obtained from the capacity building training course. The study was conducted in the coast region in four of its six districts, and in Dar es Salaam in two districts. Ten secondary schools were involved in the study. Other data were collected from the MOEVT headquarters and from the Zonal Chief Inspector of schools. Case study design and qualitative research approach were used during data collection and were facilitated by interviews and observations in which eighty-two informants participated. Documents such as enrolment registers, attendance forms, course evaluation reports, and timetables, were analyzed. Selection of two regions out of twenty-one regions limited the researcher from generalizing the results. The findings showed that heads of secondary schools found the course to be useful, motivating and practical although it was a supplier driven rather than user driven. Shortfalls of the course should be contained to improve provision of the training, in the light of the findings and conclusions. Recommendations for further study include that of a similar study to be conducted on a large scale to cover more regions.
