Effectiveness of community forest management in Kindegemsitu and Mandubulu forest in Mufindi District, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Mukupa, Enock
This study examines the effectiveness of community forest management in Kindegemsitu and Mandubulu forests in improving forest status and livelihoods at the community level in Mufindi District. It employed Disaster Cruch Model to examine the root causes of deforestation disaster in the study area in order to suggest bolistic and friendly environmental solution. Focus group discussions, field observations, structured interviews, and literature review were the method used in data collection. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel were software programme used for data analysis. The data were them presented in form of decriptions tables, and figures. The finding revealed that there several factors contributed to deforestation disaster to the study area. These factors were classified basing on the three elements namely underlying causes, dynamic pressures and unsafe condition which increased vulnelability of forest resources to the deforestation hazards. It was also found out that, there was partial community involvement in planning and secision making on forest management, a featurte that embarrasses the effectiveness of community forest management. The study conducted that community forest management proved inadequate in improving the forest status and livelihoods in the study area. It was recommended that in order to stem the everlasting socio-economic cost of deforestation disasters there is need to focus on how we can reduce all factors creating vulnerability on forest resources and manage its impact on Mother Nature more wisely. The adoption of pressure release model is proposed to address the underlying causes of deforestation and all aspect of vulnerability from social, economic and political view points at local, national and international levels so that the deforestation disaster can be reduced to tolerable levels.
