Gender equity in access and control of land resources in Tanzania case study of Kinondoni Municipality
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Mtasiwa, Elizabeth Benedict
The study is about Gender Equity in Access and Control over Land Resources in Kinondoni Municipal. The study was undertaken in four wards of Goba, Mbezi Beach, Bunju and Kinodoni. The study aimed at assessing gender equity in access and control of land resources in Kinondoni Municipality. While there have been numerous studies mentioning Kinondoni Municipal as one amongst Municipals with rampant land conflicts, this study was undertaken to examine if there are gender issues related to absence of gender equity. Findings revealed that 14% of the respondents are not aware about the gender equity in access and control of land, and education level was realized to be an obstacle to understanding this phenomenon by members of the community. Further findings revealed that, 62.4% of those who are aware of gender equity in access and control of land resources said that there is gender injustice in access and control over land resources based on the fact that 71.25% consider male to have access, control and benefits over land resources than female. Due to this injustice, society keeps experiencing social stratifications based on gender which prevailing poverty and land conflicts. Major recommendations provided include that government should initiate education programs on gender equity on land resources, media should initiate programs that could make society understand the importance of gender equity in access and control of land resource, and that the society should abolish or discourage patriarchal system at all levels starting from household level. However, all these will depend on policy reforms implementation by government officials and practitioners on land issues.
