The contribution of NGOs to the improvement of health service delivery in Tanzania a case of Benjamin Mkapa foundation
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Mtanda, Hamisi
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contribution of NGOs to health service delivery improvement in Tanzania. The study used the Benjamin Mkapa Foundation as a case study focusing on how NGOs provide support to the government of United republic of Tanzania to address the current Human Resources for Health and Health infrastructures challenge , hence strengthening the delivery of health services. The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches based on case study design. The Sample included 83 respondents of which 78 were given questionnaires and 5 were interviewed. The Study used descriptive design footed on qualitative research approach and employed purposive and simple rondom sampling. Data were collected using open and structured questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed that, through intervention done by BMAF, human resources and health infrastructures have improved in five studied health facilities of Imekuwa, Narunga, Kiwengulo, Kilombero and Kawawa dispensaries in Mtwara Rural District. This has resulted to full functioning of such health facilities and provision of full day and emergency services whenever required including maternal and child health services which were not provided before. Moreover, a number of shortcomings were also revealed, mainly being lack of provision of in-service training and less construction of water facilities Based on these findings, the study propose that, BMAF in collaboration with other stakeholders should see the possibility of providing more in-service training and construction of more water facilities due to its high demand in the study area depending on its financial capability.
