An evaluation of the impact of ELTSP and 8th IDA project materials on secondary school students' performance in english language in Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1998) Mtana, Noah Jonas
The study evaluates the impact made on students' performance in English language by ELT materials provided by the ELTSP and the 8th IDA project to secondary schools in Tanzania. 10 schools in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma were involved in the study in which 38 teachers were interviewed and 321 Form three students tested and given questionnaires to fill. Also project documents were studied and some of the project books were subjected to content analysis. It was found out that in all the three assessment criteria used (i.e. teachers views, English result in the 1995 national Form Four examination, and a reading proficiency test administered to Form three students) students in project schools performed slightly better in English Language than those in non-project schools. The study attributes the difference in performance to the difference in availability of ELT materials in the two groups of schools. It was also revealed that in the project schools ELT materials are inadequate, unevenly distributed, underutilized, and some of them are too difficult for students. Some recommendations to rectify the situation are put forward.
