The determinants of inland container depots performance in Tanzania the case of Kurasini Inland container depot
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Msengwa, Rajabu
The general objective of this study was to examine the determinants of ICDs performance in Tanzania. The specific objectives of the study were; to assess the roles of customs procedures on performance of Tanzania ICDs, to examine the equipments’ efficiency on ICD performance in Tanzania and to establish the relationship between qualities of service offered and ICD performance in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam at Kurasini Inland Container Depot. The target population was all stakeholders of the ICDs and port industry in Tanzania. Sample was stratified into three subgroups basing on the type of businesses they are engaged. The strata wereTICTS operation workers of ICD, TRA workers who were operating in these ICD’s and Clearing and Forwarding Agents (CFA). In order to accomplish the study objectives, both primary and secondary data were used. The findings of the study revealed that KICD performance has association with customs procedures. This was supported with the UNCTAD declaration of developing ASYCUDA to facilitate the customs procedures process. Moreover, the study revealed that there were no associations between KICD performance and the remaining variables which are the efficiency of equipment size and quality of service since the p-values 0.2 and 0.358 and is greater than the level of significance (α=0.05). From the findings of the study, it is recommended that KICD must have proper facility design by making sure the equipments are well maintained, buying new equipments is necessary and buying special gears for some special type of cargo is equally important. Also, TICTS should advise TRA to install a modern network system, increase number of workers and their working hours. TICTS should open a billing office at KICD and make sure that all containers are well arranged at KICD. Least but not the last, the government must improve all the necessary infrastructures for ICDs operation
