    Factors affecting women’s participation in election nominations in Tanzania: a case of Ilala Municipal Council

    Tanzania is a society that believes in the equality, rights and freedom of all people. The belief is indicated in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, which emphasises equality of all people, respect for humanity, the right to justice and equality before the law. However, it is important to note that very few women in Tanzania participate in elections nomination process. The above situation prompted the researcher to conduct this study, which aimed at assessing procedures and criteria used in nominating candidates within political parties, challenges and constraints facing women during election nominations as well as strategies which are taken by political parties and other stakeholders to enhance women’s equal access and full participation in election nominations. The study employed qualitative to a large extent as well as quantitative methods to a small extent that made the use of both primary and secondary data. Eighty respondents were involved in the study, and the sample included candidates who had contested for different political elections within the parties, wards, constituencies as well as election observers and commentators. Overall, the findings revealed that lack of political and leadership innovations in Tanzanian families, fear for election costs; socio-cultural beliefs, corruption as well as different ideologies in marriages are the factors affecting women’s participation in election nominations in Tanzania. It is recommended that NGOs/CSOs, Government and international actors should design and implement gender-sensitive tools in election nominations.
