School distance, home of residence and dropouts in community secondary schools: a case of Kinondoni District
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Msaki, Honesta Michael
This study investigated on the linkage between the school distance, home of residence and dropouts in community secondary schools, using Kinondoni as a case study. The objective of the study were; to examine extent to which to and from school distance affect students’ attendance; Investigate how student’s home of residence contribute to students dropout and; to identify ways of improving students retention in Community Secondary Schools. The study deployed a case study; three Community Secondary Schools were purposively sampled. Five residential arrangements were identified; and these were staying with parents, staying with guardians, staying in rented rooms, boarding schools and use of hostels. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, school records, and focus group discussions. Qualitative data were subjected to content analysis while quantitative data were categorized and presented in tabular form. Findings revealed that, in five years, a total of 722 students’ dropped out in the three Community Secondary Schools. Form One and Form Two had the largest number of dropouts, while Form Three and Form Four were respectively fewer. The distance above four kilometers had 58.2 dropout rates, which was the highest. In relation to residential status 42.4, 39, 31.8 percentages were for students’ who stayed with parents, in rental rooms, and with guardians. It is recommended that since the availability of decent residences near school enhances retention/completion and performance, the government of Tanzania has to strive to provide more and better boarding facilities; Support parents’ school buildings initiatives and subsidize services such as power, water and meals in hostels
