Item An assessment of effectiveness of trade unions in Tanzania ; a case of Tanzania Teachers Trade Union(University of Dar Es Salaam, 2016) Msafiri, SarahThis study sought to assess an effectiveness of Trade Unions in Tanzania: A case study of Tanzania Teachers Union. The study was conducted at Ilala municipality in Dar es Salaam region. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the problems faced by employees in Trade Unions, to assess the role of Trade Unions in improving workers working conditions and to investigate challenges faced by Trade Unions in trying to improve workers working conditions. The study used a sample of 40 employees, 5 Trade Union representatives and 5 Trade Union officers. The study used interview, focus group discussion and documentary review as tools for data collection. The findings of the study revealed that Trade Unions faced different problems such as political manipulation, financial problem, lack of training, poor partnership, mismanagement of fund, splitting of the unions, government rules and regulations, and government opposition. Also the study showed that problems faced by Trade Unions in improving workers working conditions were an indication of member’s dissatisfaction in their union. Based on the findings, the study recommended that a Trade Union has to form a partnership with other Trade Unions so as to have strong power when negotiating with the employer. Trade Unions must also have good management style, proper use of financial sources so as to meet employee’s needs and expectations. Those were the factors to be taken into consideration so as to motivate employees and bring commitment and employees satisfaction in a Trade Union.
