Determinants of youth unemployment in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Msafiri, Derick Mugisha
This study examines the determinants of youth unemployment in Tanzania mainland and also analyzes the extent as well as trend of youth unemployment over time using cross sectional secondary data from the Integrated Labour Force Survey (ILFS) of 2006 and 2014. The study applied profit model for estimation and the results portrayed that youth age, gender, marital status, location, education level and household heads significantly influence youth unemployment over time. The study results found that female gender is most affected by youth unemployment compared to male gender. However, the intensity of unemployment for young people living in urban areas are more serious compared to youth living in rural areas. In addition, non-household heads are most affected by youth unemployment compared to-household heads. Also, the study found that the higher education levels the less the chances of being unemployed. But on the other hand, the study found that the higher the education level the more likely one is to face unemployment due to job selectiveness among graduates. Further, the study found that youth unemployment is more of a problem to non-married youth in comparison to married youth. Based on the study findings, the study recommends the government should restructure the education system in order to enhance skills match among the youth. Emphasis in gender equality needs much attention in the enhancement of equal participation to both young men and women in the labour market. In addition, the government should formulate and strengthen different measures to minimize rural urban migration.
