Poverty and migration in Tanzania: a case study of Kisarawe District - Coast Region.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Mrisho, Kibuna
This study attempts to identify the link between poverty and migration in Kisarawe District. It investigates the indicators of poverty and problems which cause migration. Also, the study identifies factors that compel people to migrate. The study was carried out in Kisanga (Masaki Ward, Kisarawe), Kisegese (Kisarawe Ward), Ilala and Temeke in Dar es Salaam. The survey method was used for data collection. The instruments used to administer the survey were questionnaire, observation and interviews. The findings of the study show that, poverty is one of the most important factors influencing migration in Kisarawe rural areas. Poor earnings from agriculture and lack of socio-economic services are the major causes that influence the active groups to migrate to Dar es Salaam. Based on the findings, this study therefore recommends the following:- Poverty is a multidimensional problem operating at different levels, and varying with time, space as well as the socio-economic, political and cultural development of the respective society. Therefore, all stakeholders should be involved in rehabilitation and reduction of poverty at local, regional, and national levels to reach sustainable development. Lastly, this study suggests that future research should investigate the quality of social services in rural areas in order to develop better strategies for combating migration.
