MINING REGULATORY CHANGES AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE OPERATIONS OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN TANZANIA
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2019) Mrisha, Samuel Hudson
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of mining regulatory changes on the operations of foreign direct investment (FDI). This is due to the fact that, there are regulatory changes in the mining sector in Tanzania, and very few studies have been conducted to examine the influence of the changes to the FDI already operating in the country. The study aimed at examining the influence of the regulatory changes on: accessing capital, mineral exploration and the cost of operations for the foreign direct investments. The study utilized the transaction cost theory and the political, economic, socio-cultural, technological, environmental and legal (PESTEL) framework to gauge the relationship between the variables. Consequently, the study used a multiple case study design encompassing Acacia, AngloGold Ashanti and Shanta Gold. Questionnaire and interviews were used to collect data pertaining to the regulatory changes and how it has affected their organizations. Findings indicate that ,share price of the mining companies is affected by the regulatory changes, exploration activities are pending waiting for responses from the Government on claims that the companies have lodged. The study suggests future research to be conducted on the same study adopting a quantitative design and also on the challenges of implementing the regulatory changes.
