A mathematical formulation of regional transportation crops with an application to transportation of coffee in Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1976) Mrema, Zabdiel Charles Eliezer
The research was conducted in order to study regional transportation of crops and especially to find out the best way to transport the Kilimanjaro Coffee produced in one year from the primary societies to the curing works under minimal total transport and inventory costs. The dissertation is divided into two main parts. The first part is chapters 1 to 4 in which we discuss generally regional transportation of one crop from the primary societies to the regional co-operative union. It was found out that, if only one crop is to be transported, the transportation costs are minimal if all trucks are fully loaded and follow the shortest route. The planning of the transportation in this study is therefore not based on the minimisation of transportation costs but on the minimisation of inventory costs. Using this basis when constraints of supply and demand are taken into account, the transportation plan is formulated as an integer programming problem, an approximate solution was sought by formulating the problem as a linear programming problem. In the second part we use the linear programming formulation to plan transportation of coffee in Kilimanjaro Region. The method of research, set-up of the coffee industry in Kilimanjaro and the present method of transportation are explained in Chapter 5. Time scheduling of the transportation of coffee was computed and the results show that only the minimum requirements of the curing works should be transported in any given time.
