The usefulness of internet for commercial purpose in Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2004) Mrema, Sara Donald
Usefulness of Internet is a topical issue in Tanzania and little has been done to make use of it. There is scantly literature on the subject in Tanzania. This study is an attempt to analyse the current situation with regard to the usefulness of Internet in Tanzania. It intended to measure the accrued benefits of Internet use, specifying training requirements, problems and possible solutions to the problems relating to the Internet. It aimed at contributing to stimulate the use of Internet for business applications in Tanzania. Non parametric statistical analysis has been adopted in testing hypotheses that have been derived from research questions and qualitative analysis was done to test the proposition of this study. The analysis done indicated that; there is relationship between benefits accrued from the use of Internet and usage time. The study found that respondents have used Internet mostly for information exchange with other employees and search business information. Lack of knowledge in purchasing online, sales online and ordering online, the problem of security and threat on network, lack of poor communication infrastructure and lack of proper Government initiatives and policies towards the digital economy explain this situation. This situation is likely to change if the government will create a healthy Internet conducive environment while monitoring the proper use of the Internet. In addition, the government should initiate a change of culture with regard to better sharing and exchanging of information among the general public, which is prerequisite to make best possible use of the potential of the information age in order to increase the standard of living in Tanzania. This study expected to assist in redefining and clarifying individuals' understanding of the use and possibilities of the Internet. The study also intended to provide reference material for business firms management for commercial users, problem solutions and benefits of Internet use.
