Item Election financing and corruption loopholes in Tanzania: the case of the 2005 general elections in Dar es salaam region(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Mraha, BarakaThis study investigated issues on elections financing by political parties and their candidates, as well as addressing corruption loopholes during elections. the findings of this study revealed that the issue of party finance, particularly during elections is not properly regulated in Tanzania as the existing mechanism only focus on public funding, |which leaves private funding a viable channel to be a corruption loophole the study examined the following questions: how are elections financed by political parties and their candidates and what are the effects of non-financial limits and the importance of financial limits during elections? what are the sources of funds of political parties and their candidates during elections, and what is the impact of these sources? what are the significance and the role of money in free and fair elections and growth of democracy at large? is the lack of disclosing of funds by political parties and their candidates in Tanzania among the causes of corruption, uncommitted leaders and poor governance? the study findings showed that there are various measures, which if enforced, could minimize the negative influences of money in elections. an intensive disclosure and expenditure of funds should be seriously adhered to both the government and the private sectors with interest of curbing corruption in our elections. unless political willingness is established, election financing will remain corruptive loopholes in Tanzanian elections.
