    The impact of the marching band tradition in north-coastal Tanzania

    This thesis discusses the discernible impact of the imported marching band tradition on the music and cultural practices of the people of north-coastal Tanganyika/Tanzania. Information contained in the thesis is based on observations and in-depth interviews conducted by the researcher and vast amounts of documentation from library surveys. By studying first, the traditional processions of the research area and then relating this to the imported Western marching band traditions, the researcher observes the noticeable impact of this Western music tradition and its associated cultural traditions. The research concludes that the people in this study area are now actively living with the marching band tradition and that the tradition is now undeniably a part of their lives. The researcher formulated two main research questions through which the data presented in the thesis was collected. These questions were 1.) What is the early history of the emergence of the marching band tradition in north-coastal Tanganyika/Tanzania? 2.) What has been the impact of the marching band tradition on the people of the area of study (western musical and non-musical cultural practices) in north-coastal Tanganyika/Tanzania? Answers to these questions, appearing in Chapters Four and Five, provide knowledge on the cultural and especially musical impact brought about by foreign individuals and institutions through the marching band tradition from the period of the introduction of this tradition to today. The study ends with a summary, recommendations and conclusions.
