Statistical analysis gender differences in studying science subjects at University of Dar es Salaam
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Mosha, Peter Elia
Science is a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws. There is unequal development of science and developed countries to dominate the field of science and technology. Women and girls are under-represented especially in Africa. The study aims at assessing the status of gender differences in science majors at the UDSM main campus, using students who studied science subjects at high school level and enrolled into UDSM. The study adopted logistic regression, with University major, advanced secondary school major, advanced secondary school performance, sponsorship, sex attitude towards science as variables. Analysis of the data revealed that among total males enrolled (9550), it was found that only 31.33% (2992) males were enrolled into science majors and among 5038 females enrolled, and only 11.49% (579) were males. The rate of enrollment into science is very low for both male and females, females are reveled to have extremely low enrolments rate into science majors of only 16.2% of science major enrolments and 4.0% of all enrolled students. There was a statistically significant relationship between University major and other variables except for sponsorship which have a 0.319 P-value. Sex, advanced level secondary subjects’ combination and performance seemed to be the main determinants contributing to the decision of selecting university major; with different magnitudes. It has been noticed that there are various factors contributing to the selection of university majors ranging from social to academic background obtained from secondary school level.
