(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Mosha, Godson N.R.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become very important in the modern business world both in developed as well as developing countries. Organizations are heavily dependent on information systems to execute their daily operations and provide customers and management with viable accurate, timely, relevant information for decision making. Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) are adopting information systems in their businesses. However the processes of adopting these systems have not been without drawbacks. Some of business companies have spent big sums of money in anticipation of getting a system that will meet their business needs through increased savings and increased efficiency, but to their surprise they end up being frustrated by getting a system that does not meet their requirement and expectations. This study focused on influence of information and communication technology on the development of Microfinance Institutions a case study of Moshi-rural district in Kilimanjaro Region. Data was collected through the use of structured questionnaires from Moshi-rural district. The total number of the respondents to the questionnaire was 112 out of 121 distributed questionnaires it is about 93%. Based on the variable and the stated hypothesis, the multiple linear regression model was used to analyse data obtained from the field. The findings of this study reveal that ICT application has significant impact on MIFs development in the rural areas. However some of parameters used in this study were not currently significant. It was revealed that Point of sale/service is not significant for the development of MFIs in rural areas because it has a negative effect to the overall development of MFIs. Computer usage and mobile phones are the variables that have at positive influence on the development of MFIs in rural areas.
