The influence of business management experience, education, gender and innovation on the growth of small and medium enterprises: a case of Hairdressing and Barbering Shops in Kinondoni Municipality
(University of Dar Es Salaam, 2016) Mongo, Rose Bernard
The study explored the influence of business management experience, level of education, gender and innovation on the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises by focusing on hairdressing and barbering shops in Kinondoni Municipality. In this study probability sampling was used to select a sample of 100 owner-managers’ randomly in a pool of registered hair salons population. A structured questionnaire was used as data collection instrument, whiles frequencies, percentages, one sample t-test, one way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis was used for data analysis. The study results indicate business management experience, level of education and innovation influence growth (ß, 0.181, p, 0.075, p, 0.083 and ß, 0.179, p, 0.085 significant level at p 0.10 respectively). This clarifies that only 22.3% has influence on the growth of hairdressing and barbering shops as explained by the R square (R2), whereas gender and partly of business management experience have no significant influence on growth. The findings however recommend that female owner-managers should try and put more efforts in innovation like men so as to be able to run their hair salons business profitably and competitively by delivering and advising customers. Moreover learning institutions are advised to take this as an opportunity to provide business education (seminars) to owner-managers. Furthermore, this is the perfect time for government to make amendment of its policies. Therefore it’s recommended that government should put in place favorable environment for Small and Medium Enterprises as indicated in SMEs development policy of 2003.
