    Social security in Tanzania: an analysis of the conditions influencing the plight of retired teachers in Dar es Salaam and Arusha

    The purpose of this study was to explore empirically the problem of social security for retirees in Tanzania. This exploration involved examining historically the origin and development of Modern Social Security (MSS). It involved the adequacy of retirement benefits; analysing the impact of social security arrangements on individuals; and examining the retirees' supportive elements. The general hypothesis was that retirees' social insecurity is related to changing social security arrangements. The study tested specific proposition: - The more adequate survival benefits, the greater security. -The higher the social insecurity, the greater the isolation. -The higher social insecurity, the greater will be the correlation between rank and self-actualization based on perceived amount of valuable contribution. The study was exploratory. In this way, a case study approach was used. Documentary analysis; interview, questionnaire and observation in the survey were the primary tools of analysis. Findings as per documentary source show that the penetration of colonialism affected traditional social security arrangements based on mutual sanctions at kinship community levels. Imposition of money economy, uniform legal system, and the paralysing of traditional political/authority arrangements which were introduced became inadequate, because they were not meant to cover all the needs of the beneficiaries who, faced a host of problems. As regard to the impact of MSS the findings from the field indicate that, economically retirees were unable to support themselves purely on derived retirement benefits. Socially, as a result of inadequate social security benefits retirees status, standard of living, confidence etc were adversely affected, thereby demoralised, leading to their isolation depression
