Item Assessment of the effect of teachers’ compensation practices in private secondary schools in Tanzania :a case study of Mbezi secondary school(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Mlowe, Edmund AntonThis study assessed the effect of teacher’s compensation practices in private secondary schools in Tanzania, a case study of Mbezi Secondary School. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of teachers’ compensation practices in private secondary schools in Tanzania. The specific objectives were; to investigate the effect of teachers’ compensation on school performance, to investigate whether teachers are satisfied with compensation offered, to investigate the teachers’ attitude towards the compensation practices and to investigate why teachers leave private secondary schools. The study was descriptive in nature and therefore qualitative research approaches were utilized. The study involved a total of 34 respondents at Mbezi Secondary School. Data were collected by the use of questionnaires, interview and documentary review. Statistical package for social sciences were employed in data analysis (SPSS). The findings of this study revealed that most of teachers were dissasfied with the compensation offered hence they were ready to move to either other schools or jobs which provide fair compensation. This has resulted into high teacher turnover at Mbezi Secondary School. The study also revealed that inadequate compensation to teachers has caused reduction of stundent’s performance. This study concluded that, in order for the school to have teachers who are happy and ready to stay for a long period of time, then should make sure that there is fair compensation to teachers. Also teachers must be consulted for their compensation allowances since will enable them feel valued hence improve their commitment to the school.
