    The contribution of religious institutions to the provision of secular education in Tanzania: the case of Pentecostal Churches in Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania

    The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of religious institutions to the provision of secular education in the United Republic of Tanzania: the case of Pentecostal churches in Dar es Salaam region. The contribution of religious institutions to the provision of secular education in Tanzania was examined under three research tasks which guided the study. First, to examine the history and development of Pentecostal churches in Tanzania. Secondly, to examine the contribution of Pentecostal churches to the provision of secular education. Thirdly, to explore the challenges that Pentecostal churches faced to the provision of secular education. The study employed qualitative approach. Thus, it is a qualitative enquiry. The relevant data to this work were collected from Dar es Salaam region. In gathering data, sampling techniques random and purposive sampling procedures were adopted. The sample of the study constituted 55 respondents, including education officers, church ministers, Pentecostal local church members, registrar of religious institutions and parents. The methods used for data collection involved interviews, document search and observation. The data were collected and analyzed using qualitative approach. The findings revealed that Pentecostal churches have engaged themselves to the provision of secular education through the establishment of different education institutions from pre-primary to tertiary and higher levels differing in magnitudes. The churches however, have planned various efforts to contribute knowledge in secular education in the future, includes the intended construction of educational institutions. Nevertheless, the churches encounter several challenges. These were church doctrine, financial constraints and the nationalization policy. The study found that, some immediate measures needed to be taken by Pentecostal churches so as to address the challenges. The study recommends that the government should increase and strengthen cooperation with other education stakeholders including charity groups in order to broaden the provision of secular education.
