Form Two Secondary Education Examination (FTSEE) as a tool for raising education standards at secondary school level: a study at secondary schools in Dar es Salaam and Mbeya regions.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2004) Mkiramweni, William Elihuruma Fanuel
This study investigated the Form Two Secondary Education Examination (FTSEE) as a tool for raising educational standards at secondary school level. Specific variables under the study included FTSEE and its motivation to teachers including students. The study was undertaken in twelve secondary schools in both Dares Salaam and Mbeya regions. The study involved twelve school heads, 120 teachers and 388 students. The study sought responses on the extent to which FTSEE results of particular students correlated with Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) results at a number of selected schools. It also sought to find out the extent to which both teachers and students perceived FTSEE as a motivation for performance improvement in teaching and learning processes at secondary school level. In the quantitative approach, the Pearson correlation coefficient with oc=0.01 level of significance in a two -tailed test was used. Qualitatively, questionnaires were used to collect information from secondary school heads, teachers and students. The obtained correlation coefficient values, most of which were greater than 0.5, revealed that there was a significant correlation between FTSEE results and CSEE results. This implies that there is a significant relationship between FTSEE results and CSEE results. Similarly, findings from the questionnaires showed that the majority of teachers and school heads in both regions perceived the existence of the relationship between FTSEE results and those of the CSEE. Findings from the questionnaires revealed that secondary school students, teachers and school heads perceived that both students as well as teachers in both regions were motivated by FTSEE to work hard in teaching and learning processes. Likewise, findings from this study revealed that FTSEE created a learning competitive environment among students. In sum, if FTSEE creates both students' and teachers' motivation to work hard, then it facilitates students' performance and consequently, raises educational standards.
