Item Performance improvement of the triple band antenna for WLAN and WIMAX applications(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Mkindu, Hassan YakubuThe fast growth in wireless communication in recent years has increased the demand of an antenna which can support different wireless systems in mobile devices. Due to space constraints in mobile devices there is a need of designing an antenna structure covering multiple bands rather than to employ several antennas for each wireless standard. The main objective of this dissertation was to design a triple band antenna with improved performance characteristics which can support WLAN and WiMAX applications. In this research work, the suggested antenna has been designed and simulated using Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio Version 2010 software (CST MWS V 10.0). A micro-strip feeding technique was used, and the design included slotted patch and reduced ground plane with etched slot. Sigma plot software was used for simulated results analysis and comparison to obtain optimum parameter values for better antenna performance. The triple band antenna provides better performance characteristics for covering WLAN (2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz) and WiMAX (2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz) operating bands with impedance bandwidth of 130 MHz (2.39-2.52 GHz), 530 MHz (3.28-3.81 GHz) and 2300 MHz (5.14-6.97 GHz). The simulated radiation patterns for all of its frequencies in E-plane are bidirectional and in H-plane are nearly to Omni directional radiation patterns. The antenna gain at 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 5.5 GHz was 2.05 dBi, 2.34 dBi and 3.61 dBi respectively. The antenna has overall dimensions of 18×28×1.6 mm3. This antenna has better performance by comparing with related antennas.
