Implementation of WTO Policies in Tanzania regarding Tanzania National trade policies and performance.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Mkina, Buyamba
The aim of the study was to demonstrate and evaluate trade liberalization as implemented by Tanzania in the context of economic reform and integrating the country into the global economy. Using reliable information obtained from public institutions, agencies and business operators, the study demonstrates clearly the direct correlation between Tanzanian's trade policy changes and development performance, focusing more on certain specific commitments and implementation of GATT/WTO Agreements and prescriptions of the IMF and the World Bank. Drawing on the experience of Tanzania so far, the study establishes that trade liberalization both as a national strategy for transformation and a response to requirements of international agreements have generated mixed results in terms of gains and losses. The study suggest that lack of strategic preparedness has been the main cause of failure to realize satisfactory results. It is suggested that in order to translate its past economic experience into useful lesson, there is room for formulation of deliberate policy measures both at macro and micro levels which is implemented could generate greater possibility for transforming country into meaningful participant in international trade. This will be backed up with a rigorous analysis of domestic and international data on investments and trade. Among the key factors that the dissertation argues, is the importance of application of qualified professional skills as well as technology in production and marketing, in addition to sound financial and investment decisions. In particular, the study emphasizes that formulation of realistic economic policy strategies should be accompanied by necessary and adequate resources
