The impact of surplus and obsolete stocks in public owned utilities: a case study of TANESCO
(Unversity of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Mkama, Thomas C.N.
The appropriate level of the firm business continuity is the key variable in any utility sector, which offers service level to its client with dependency to stocks of working materials and spare parts. Sometimes organizations find themselves with surplus and obsolete stocks. The aim of this study was to identify factors that contributed to existence of surplus and obsolete stocks at TANESCO and their impact. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam reions where employees who work in different sections of supplies department were the respondents, the survey approach was used to collect the quantitative data by using simple random sampling and 100 respondents were contacted in total from Dar rs Salaam TANESCO Regions and Head quarters, the data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed. The findings revealed that stock management systems and lack of qualified staff had an influence on obsolete and surplus stock level. Purchasing procedures on the other hand had no influence on obsolete and surplus stock level. Perhaps, this is due to good purchase policies and plans adopted at TANESCO.
