Item The emergence and use of African theatre in church choir performances: A Case Study of Tumaini Lutheran Choir in Dar es Salaam(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Mkallyah, KassomoThis study examines the emergence and use of traditional African theatre forms in church choir performances. In this case, it was felt that there is a need to find out changes and factors that led to the introduction and use of traditional African theatre forms in church choir performances by using Tumaini Msasani Lutheran Choir as a case study. The study shows that Tanzanian church choirs have changed from using hymns to traditional African theatre forms in their performances. The major reason is the need to bring church activities closer to African realities and culture. Moreover, the study reveals that traditional African theatre forms that are used in church choirs have changed their major functions from teaching values and traditions to being media for preaching. The study concludes that the use of traditional African theatre forms in church has also changed the negative attitude that was cemented in the peoples’ mind that those forms were satanic.
