    The effectiveness of health and safety practices at the construction sites: the case of Dar es Salaam City

    Construction industry is an important part of the economy in most countries. It is often seen as a driver of economic growth especially in developing countries Tanzania being one of them. Apart from this importance the construction industry involves many operations which can be risky, dangerous and unhealthy. The number of injuries, accidents, and work related illnesses reported on construction sites exceed that of the manufacturing industry thus contributing to the decreasing of total revenue of the country (Tanzania). To ensure that accidents are reduced /eliminated at construction sites to a great percentage this study aimed on investigating the effectiveness health and safety practices at construction sites. In this research, qualitative research techniques were used. A questionnaire survey was disseminated to a sample of 60 construction workers from five different work sites. The qualitative data analysis technique was applied using the content analysis. Findings observed a number of problems in the construction sites these problems mainly; lack of training, shortage of personal protective gears and poor equipments, Also supervisors and workers are not aware about Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA). The study recommended a number of measures to address the problem this include the employers to implement effective occupational health and safety as per OSHA rules and regulations and to provide incentives to employees who use their protective gears properly. Also researcher suggests that OSHA should make sure that they do their obligation by being closed with construction sites through inspections/ auditing.
