Assessment of the influence of internet on information seeking behaviour of Kilakala and St. Peter’s secondary school students in Morogoro municipality in the internet era.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Mganga, Martha
The main objective of this study was to assess the influence of internet on information seeking behaviour of students in selected secondary schools in Morogoro Municipality. The study sought to identify students’ academic information needs satisfied via the internet; examine techniques employed by students when searching for information via internet; identify challenges faced by students when seeking information through the internet and determine changes in students information seeking behavior. The study employed a survey research design, involving 86 respondents, who were randomly and purposively selected. Key findings revealed that secondary school students in the selected schools face a number of problems when searching information for their academic needs via the internet including: shortage of computer facilities; low speed of internet connectivity; savers down; frequent power blackout; and low speed in typing reading materials. However, shortage of computer facilities took a higher ranking of 74.6% among the addressed challenges. The findings also revealed that the majority of respondents used the internet to fulfil a number of academic activities, hence their information seeking behaviour was tilted towards adopting the internet as a key and dependable source of information formeeting their academic information needs. In view of the above, the study recommends strengthening of ICT infrastructure in secondary schools in order to enable students access internet services and other electronic resources. Internet and information retrieval skills be included in the school syllabus to equip students with knowledge on internet use. The study concludes that despite the underdeveloped ICT infrastructure in the selected secondary schools, yet, there is evidence to suggest that the internet has influenced the information seeking behaviour of secondary school students to an appreciable extent.
