    Liberalization of telecommunication sector in Tanzania and performance of Tanzania telecommunication company limited (TTCL) within liberalization era (case study)

    This study compared the performance of Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) within liberalization era against the performance of same company when it was under state-owned monopoly. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. The study revealed that Telecommunication services in Tanzania during monopoly were not reliable. The financial status of TTCL was not good, and therefore, the sector was not contributing much to the country economy. The quality of telecommunication services, and knowledge in marketing was not very good. Generally, TTCL was not performing well during monopoly as compared to liberalization period. It was noted that liberalization of the telecommunication industry in Tanzania brought competition in the sector by allowing other telecommunication operators in the market to challenge TTCL. Liberalization also opened door to rural area where more than 75% Tanzanians population were not able to access telecommunication services. The financial status of TTCL has not improved very much but the quality and strategies in marketing have been changed to suit competition environmentThe study concluded that prior to liberalization of the telecommunication sector in Tanzania, TTCL performance has not changed very much although the gap between monopoly and liberalization has been reduced.
