    Assessment of employee involvement in work organisations evidence from construction companies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    The study aimed at assessing the employee’s involvement in work organizations, focusing on construction companies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The objective of the study was to assess the nature of employee involvement practices in the construction industry in Dar es Salaam. Data were collected from employees working in different six (6) construction companies in Dar es Salaam at Kinondoni District. A total of 105 self-administered questionnaires were distributed to respondents within ten (10) companies which were randomly selected; where only 75 from six (6) companies were filled and yielded 71% return rate. The collected data were analysed through content analysis with the assistance of the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings were summarized into tables and percentages. The study findings showed that there is low employee involvement, which suggests that the construction industry is either not very informed or not yet prepared to embrace the Employee Involvement (EI) practices despite its advantages to the management and employees. Moreover, the limited activities of employee and management committee as well as near-inexistence of Workers Council (WC) suggested that the space for EI in the construction industry had been reduced. Recommendations deduced from this study states that much EI is a necessity as prescribed in various labour legislation (ELRA 2004, Standing Order for the public services 2009) plus various employees and labour relations established in various studies (Salamon, 2000), (Heathfield, 2000). Therefore, it is something that needs to be established at every work place in Tanzania. The other recommendation is that the construction industry needs to re-examine its position and take measures to offer more space for EI at work organizations. However, direct or indirect EI has to be noticeable by the workforce within firms and industry at large. Deliberate actions have to be taken by the industry, however, the government has to enforce the labour laws and ensure that all organizations in the industry comply with the law – Employment & Labour Relations Act (ELRA 2004) – by establishing functioning Workers Council (WC), Employees and Management Committee (EMC), Consultative Committees and other employees involvement organs for the benefit of both employer and employees.
