Impact of industrial operations on the environment in the lake zone-an investigation of opportunities for cleaner production in food processing’’
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2002) Mesanga, Fabian Aloyce Mwita
Cleaner production is a concept meant to address environmental pollution right at source. It has proved to be a win-win strategy because it protects the environment, workers, and customers while improving industrial efficiency, profitability and competitiveness. The aim of the project was to explore the extent to which the food processing industry in the lake zone was contributing to environmental pollution, and come up with suggestions for positive actions to mitigate the impacts. In so doing the study would be translating the goals of the International Declaration on Cleaner Production launched in October 1998 in Seoul into actions. The UNIDO/ UNEP assessment methodology was employed in data collection. Following the discussion of the findings, the food processing industry in the lake zone has been found to pollute the environment through discharge of large quantities of organic loaded wastewater into the environment and burning of furnace oil. Environmental impacts of waste produced by the food factories have been identified. Cost aspects of generating waste are highlighted to show the burden of creating waste. Cleaner Production options for each factory have been identified. Overall, the objectives of the research have been fulfilled and hypotheses supported. Several conclusions and recommendations have been put forward.
