    Influence of managerial factors on teachers’ retention in Non- government secondary school in Tanzania: the case of Rungwe district and Mbeya city in Mbeya region

    This study examined the role managerial factors for teachers’ retention in non-government secondary schools (MGSSs) in Rungwe district and Mbeya city. The study had three objectives. First, to examine the role of financial and non-financial practices and their impact on teachers, retention or to mover in a particular (NGSS) in Rungwe District and Mbeya city. Second, to assess teachers’ availability (adequacy) and qualifications at NGSSs in Rungwe district and Mbeya city.Third, to investigate terms of employment used by NGSS management and their impact on teachers’ retention in Rungwe district and Mbeya district. The study involved 70 information of whom 58 were teachers, six were school heads and six were school board members. Teachers were selected using simple random, cluster and snow ball sampling techniques while school heads and board members were purposively selected. The study used interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires, documentary reviews and observation as data collection as data methods. Content analysis was used while demographic pieces of information were summarized and presented in tables and graphs. Findings, from the field indicated that NGSS management retained teachers because of high and reliable salaries, incentives, good leadership, professional development, and good working conditions 143 out of 163 were teachers by professional while 54.8% and 45.2% were retention and turnover rates, respectively. Teachers’ shortage was 17.9% teachers were either permanently employed or signed a renewable contract of 2 or 3 years. So for the NGSSs management to retain teachers , it is recommended to them to establish professional development programmes, school-based savings and credit cooperative societies (SOCCOS) and increase salaries as well as incentives.
